5 Top Tips for Working on an Orchard

We spend a lot of time on orchards so we are definitely the experts when it comes to keeping yourself fit and healthy for the harvesting season. Take a look at our top tips below!

  1. DRINK WATER

Investing in a reusable water bottle is a wise decision for seasonal work. Even if the days are colder, kiwifruit harvesting is still an active days work as you will be moving constantly throughout the orchard with your harvesting bag slung on your shoulders (and some of the orchards are quite large!). Drinking water at regular intervals will keep pesky headaches away and keep you hydrated throughout the day!

2. MUSIC

A good playlist will definitely keep you moving and motivated throughout the day. If you want, you can bring headphones to work or bring a speaker and create a playlist with your team!

3. HAYFEVER TABLETS

If you are one of the unlucky souls who suffer from pollen allergies, it might be wise to get some hay fever tablets. Through harvesting season, the pollen is not as much a problem as it is in the earlier seasons. But, if you find yourself vine-training, wearing a mask can also really help with reducing the symptoms.

4. WEAR SUNSCREEN

Even when the weather is cooler in harvesting season, it is still really important that you protect your skin! The sky may look overcast, but because the ozone layer is thin here in New Zealand, those sun-rays get through really easily!

5. BE FRIENDLY

It’s likely that the people you work with will be your team for the whole season. So be friendly! Making friends on the orchard makes the job a lot easier - plus it means that you can have a laugh whilst you work!
